Chapter 18

Malaya

It took all night for the hotel staff to get the elevator doors open. They apologized profusely to Tazi, who ignored them entirely to drag me back down the stairs.

He pushed through the first responders trying to figure out why the building had been moving like a plate of Jell-O a toddler had been shaking before it suddenly stopped.

He made his way to the nearest restaurant with a low-hanging roof lit up by the glow of dawn. He waltzed right in, past the line, and snatched menus out of the hostess’s hands. The people the hostess had been seating began protesting until he turned to face them. Tazi raised a brow at the group. They stumbled away.

“A-alpha, p-please go ahead!” they urged, and I realized they must be part of his pack.

“Tazi! You can’t just take their seats!” I shrieked.

A blonde girl lit up. “Is this the Luna everyone is talking about?”

Before I could correct her that I wasn’t the Luna yet, Tazi cut in, wrapping his bulging arm around my shoulder and squeezing. “Yes, she is.”

She squealed while the others gawked. “I never thought he would settle down! Oh my gosh, are you a demi goddess? You have some amazing hair! It’s like burgundy red with orange highlights! Are you a fire elementalist?”

“I’m sorry, what?”

“You don’t smell like a wolf, and Tazi’s standards are crazy high.” She motioned to the other girls around her who looked like they could be on the cover of magazines. “Alexa, Lennell, and Kiki all tried to seduce him but failed miserably and had to move on to the untouchable number two.”

One of the girls elbowed her, and her voice trailed off as she glanced at Tazi where he was glowering.

I snorted out a laugh. “I get it. Go after what you want, right? Rejection is better than never trying.” I shrugged. “So, who’s the new target?”

Horrified looks morphed to grins. “Seamus.”

One girl sighed dramatically, flipping her strawberry-blonde hair behind her shoulder. “But rumor has it that he has his eyes set on some new girl on the island.”

“Mia?” one offered.

“No, Mira,” another corrected.

Tazi snarled, and a power pulsed from him, causing the girls to jump. He was close to shifting and that was the last thing we needed in a restaurant full of humans. My cheeks burned, and I snatched Tazi’s hand, the feeling of fur brushed against me.

“Nice to meet you all but I’m starving.” I attempted to drag the irate alpha away. Instead, he wrapped his fingers around mine.

He yanked me closer, and I gasped, slamming into his firm side. The group of girls’ mouths dropped open as Tazi wrapped his arms around me like a second skin and his head dipped. Burying his nose in my hair, he breathed long and deep.

The sparks that had accompanied his touch before had given way to a warmth, like a heating pad on a frigid day. Something comforting I hadn’t realized I needed until he pressed against me.

As much as he shouldn’t have this effect on me, the even stranger thing was that I could calm his wolf.
